I was intensely skeptical of Pinterest in the beginning, perhaps because I saw it as being a very very girlie social network. I mean they all are to an extent, but this one especially! But now, I think I might be coming around. Because the marketing benefits of Pinterest could be huge for those Pinners with popular Pinterests. This quick guide on how to use Pinterest for SEO should explain that pretty pictures might be exactly the value add your SEO campaign is looking for.
No link to your website?
I had a thought after listening to Rand Fishkin speak at an event the other day. He mentioned that Google seems to look favourably on websites that have a great brand. In search terms this means websites whose top-level domain contains the brand name of a reputable company, E.g. Nike.com where people actually “Google” Nike rather than visiting the top level domain directly.
I really want to do a test with our websites to see if prompting people throughout the web to “Google” us will make any difference to overall search rankings… should be a interesting little experiment!!
Social Media as a concept
Everybody’s all up on social media. It’s the big buzz phrase online. And rightly so, because everyone has the ability to talk about it now.
That’s millions of people yapping on about the tools they use for both business and pleasure. But I don’t see it. I’m sorry. It’s not that I’m old (I’ll be 25 on Wednesday), it’s that social media tools are seriously not that important. Social Media isn’t Twitter, social media isn’t Facebook or Yelp or anything else. And THAT’S why I’ve been so frustrated for so long with everybody crapping on about social media being such a friggin innovation.
Are you starting a web-based company?
Websites and business objectives
I hear people all the time saying “I need a website”.
When we first started out doing web design as part of Screenwords I know I laid this fallacy on dozens of people. Why? I knew that people did need websites, but I didn’t have a good answer for why. As good as we were at building them a year or so ago, we were definitely not the best as applying the development of websites to the company’s actual business objectives.
Whether you need to make sales online, to support your personal brand or to raise awareness for a cause, you DO need a website. The only question is really, what kind?
